Diagnostic Methods in Dermatovenereology

During the initial examination, the specialist carefully examines the patient's history and complaints, examines the skin or genitals and asks follow-up questions. Depending on the clinical case, techniques such as dermatoscopy (or dermatoscopy) are used to confirm a preliminary diagnosis in dermatovenerology:

  • Dermatoscopy (or fluorescent microscopy).
It is a safe and painless procedure that is performed with a special device called a dermatoscope. The device enables one to examine the skin under multiple magnifications with polarized or unpolarized light.
  • Laboratory examination.
The following tests are carried out: microscopy of scrapes, blood serum tests for total IgE levels, intra- and epicutaneous skin tests in allergies, immunogram, general blood tests, stool and urine tests, biochemical blood tests, urethral, vaginal and/or cervical smears, virology, bacteriology, mycology, serology in dermatological diseases, blood tests for syphilis and HIV.
  • Cytology.
Performed to study morphological abnormalities in cells in various neoplasms or non-tumoural lesions.
  • Histological examination.
Carried out in tumour processes to assess the extent and stage of pathology.
  • Angiography for vascular disorders.
Appointed in hemangiomas, lymphangiomas, pyogenic granulomas, flaming nevi.
  • Biopsy.
Necessary to obtain samples of pathologically changed tissues of non-tumoural and tumour formations. Special needles are used to reduce the trauma of the procedure.

In some cases, skin symptoms indicate the presence of pathologies of other organs and systems. In such cases, treatment by a dermatovenerologist is supplemented by appointments with an endocrinologist, oncologist, gynaecologist, urologist, allergist, surgeon, gastroenterologist, haematologist or another specialist (as indicated).

Treatment Methods in Dermatovenereology

The treatment tactics for dermatovenereological diseases are determined by the specific features of the clinical case. The patient may be recommended a course of drug therapy, laser therapy, physiotherapy, dressings, an individual skincare regime and a special diet. If necessary, control tests are carried out to assess the quality of treatment and the results help the dermatologist-venereologist to make necessary adjustments to the treatment plan or to monitor the cure of infectious diseases.
