Ankylosing spondylitis (Bechterew's disease) is a chronic systemic inflammatory disease of connective tissue that mainly affects the joints and ligaments of the spine. It is accompanied by pain and limited spinal mobility due to ossification of the spinal ligaments.

Ankylosing Spondylitis (Bechterew's Disease): Is There a Solution?

Ankylosing spondylitis is characterized by progressive limitation of spinal mobility and shortening of the spine. Its main sign is pain in the sacrum and lower back, which is more noticeable at night. Gradually the rest of the spine, the shoulder and hip joints, and the sacrum become involved; the hands and feet are much less involved in the chronic process. Over time the natural curves of the spine flatten out, and in some cases the disease begins with joint damage, which is typical for teenage patients.

Causes

The exact causes of ankylosing spondylitis are unknown. One theory is that the disease may be related to genetic factors combined with environmental influences that act as triggers of the degenerative process.

Negative factors include:

Why is it dangerous? If the disease is left untreated, it may lead to severe stiffness of the spine. The patient gradually adopts a “supplicant's posture” (rounded back, arms bent at the elbows, legs bent at the knees, and head lowered). Besides limiting spinal mobility, without treatment the disease may spread to other organs and systems.

How Ankylosing Spondylitis Is Treated

The main treatment of ankylosing spondylitis is prescribed by a rheumatologist and usually includes medication and regular therapeutic exercise. As a supportive method, high-intensity magnetotherapy may be used to help relieve pain and maintain spinal mobility. We recommend procedures on the Super Inductive System (SIS) device, which our clinic uses in its practice. This physiotherapy has an analgesic effect and may improve circulation and tissue nutrition.

High-intensity magnetotherapy may help maintain joint mobility, spinal flexibility, and good posture. It is also used to reduce the intensity of back pain, preserve the range of rotation, and increase mobility. Treatment of ankylosing spondylitis with SIS aims to preserve physical activity, ease uncomfortable symptoms, and help prevent complications such as deformities and injuries. Patients and their relatives have shared positive feedback about the therapeutic program.
