Laser Acupuncture at CSM Clinic

Laser acupuncture is a physiotherapy method in which a laser is used to stimulate acupuncture points. The laser acts without breaking the patient's skin (no needle puncture is performed). Because the skin is not damaged, there is no risk of infection of the kind that exists with traditional needle acupuncture. For this reason, the method is often considered for people with weakened immunity, including children prone to allergic reactions.

Laser acupuncture is a type of laser therapy that replaces the needles of traditional Chinese acupuncture. Low-intensity laser light is a convenient replacement for needles and for the rather complex technique of using them. For laser acupuncture, laser light with a wavelength of 635 nm (red spectrum) and an output power of no more than 2-3 mW at the end of the light guide, or a special applicator no more than 1-1.5 mm in diameter, is considered optimal. Exposure should stay strictly within 20-40 seconds for body points and 5-10 seconds for auricular points. The acupuncture points are stimulated in sequence according to a prescription, with no more than 10-12 daily procedures per course.

How It Works

Combining biological and photomechanical effects, a high-intensity laser may help speed up tissue regeneration and has a pronounced pain-relieving effect that does not cause habituation. The particular wavelength acts on free nerve endings, which may reduce the transmission of pain signals through the nervous system. Because laser radiation is coherent and monochromatic, it can be adjusted precisely, so the effect of the procedure can be predicted. To reduce loss of laser radiation, the light guide is placed in contact with the skin (it touches the skin directly) with periodic pressure and moved across the body.
