International Experience in Treating Cerebral Palsy
Modern treatment of cerebral palsy in children is based on a multidisciplinary approach, early rehabilitation and a combination of several therapy methods. International experience suggests that outcomes are generally better when the treatment program is tailored to the individual and the child receives long-term support.
USA and Canada
Early intervention programs are widely used in the USA and Canada. Children with suspected CP are enrolled as early as possible in:
- physical therapy;
- occupational therapy;
- speech therapy;
- training parents in care skills.
Widely used methods include:
- botulinum therapy;
- orthoses;
- intensive physical rehabilitation;
- selective dorsal rhizotomy (SDR).
The USA is also active in research on umbilical cord blood and stem cell treatment for CP, which is still being studied.
Europe
Specialized rehabilitation centers for children with CP have been established in European countries. The following are being introduced:
- robotic training devices;
- VR rehabilitation;
- modern orthoses;
- augmentative and alternative communication systems for children with speech disorders.
In the United Kingdom and the Scandinavian countries, much attention is given to the socialization, education and inclusion of children with CP in society.
Asia
The following are being actively researched in China, South Korea, Japan and India:
- stem cells;
- gene therapy;
- cell technologies;
- neurorehabilitation.
In South Korea and Japan, research is under way on cell transplantation and iPSC technologies for restoring the nervous system.
Cerebral Palsy Treatment in Ukraine
Modern international approaches to treating children with CP are also being introduced in Ukraine. The following are becoming available:
- botulinum therapy;
- modern physical rehabilitation;
- neurostimulation;
- VR therapy;
- device-based treatment methods.
Ukrainian clinics and specialists are gradually joining international research and rehabilitation programs, which may give children access to modern CP treatment technologies.
