Can Swelling (Edema) Be Reduced?

Edema is a buildup of fluid in organs and tissues. This puffiness and swelling makes the skin look shiny and stretched, and it worsens under gravity in the lower parts of the body. That is why swelling of the lower leg can be very noticeable after prolonged sitting or standing, or in the evening. If you quickly press a finger on the swollen area, a small dimple forms in the skin.

In people with ascites, swelling develops in the abdomen (the waist grows larger), the chest swells, and breathing becomes difficult.

Why Is Edema Dangerous and Where Does It Come From?

• Insufficient physical activity.
• Various injuries, bruises, fractures, etc.

• Pregnancy and the changes in the body that accompany it.
• Kidney, circulatory and digestive diseases, metabolic disorders and a number of other conditions.
• Heart failure can show up as swelling of the legs and abdomen and can also cause pulmonary edema, which makes breathing difficult. This condition can be very dangerous and requires urgent treatment.
• Lymphedema. Surgical removal of lymph nodes during cancer treatment (mainly breast cancer) can lead to swelling in one or both limbs with thickening of the skin. • The habit of crossing one leg over the other. Sedentary or, more often, standing work, tired legs and heat, and tight, uncomfortable shoes can all disturb circulation in the legs.
• Taking certain contraceptives and medications. Swelling can be a side effect of many medicines, including estrogen and over-the-counter pain relievers (for example, ibuprofen), diabetes drugs and blood pressure medications.
• Excessive consumption of alcohol and other fluids, when intake exceeds excretion.
• Poor nutrition leading to an imbalance of electrolytes: sodium, potassium and chloride ions.
• Chronic venous disease, when blood pools in the vessels. This can lead to fluid retention in the lower legs, thinning of the skin and, in some cases, ulcers. Swelling can also develop because of blood clots in the deep veins of the lower leg. In such cases, swelling is usually limited to the foot and ankle and affects one side. Swelling related to other diseases usually affects both legs.
• Angioedema. Signs may include a hoarse voice, a feeling of tightness in the throat and difficulty swallowing. Swelling of the throat is life-threatening.
• Liver cirrhosis, a process in which liver tissue is replaced by scar tissue, can disrupt blood flow through the liver. People with this condition may have marked swelling of the abdomen and lower legs.
• Menstruation. Regular monthly swelling in women can result from natural hormonal changes during the menstrual cycle and then goes away on its own.
• Travel. After prolonged sitting, for example during a flight, the legs may swell. This is common and is not a symptom of disease. However, swelling that persists for several days after a flight requires a medical examination. In this case, swelling and pain may be signs of venous thrombosis.

What should you do if you have swelling? First, see a doctor, who will order a full examination. Swelling itself may be "harmless," but it can signal a serious disease. This can only be determined together with your treating doctor.
