Art therapy is a specialized form of psychotherapy based on art, primarily visual and creative activity.
The essence of art therapy is to help a person (an adult or a child) calm down and ease emotional or physical pain through creating. The creative process changes a person's attitude toward their own negative experiences, feelings, and illnesses and may help achieve psychological comfort.
As soon as a person picks up a brush, clay, or sand, they release their subconscious. As a result, a person may experience relief through the self-expression of their creative potential. This is a natural way to work through emotions, in which negative emotions can be transformed into positive ones. Art therapy sessions can provide strength and confidence and help find a way out of a difficult situation. The use of artistic creativity helps raise self-esteem and a realistic acceptance of oneself in society. In the course of creative work, many problems that were deeply hidden come to the surface and can be addressed gently.
The importance of art therapy techniques in the correction of neuroses and neurosis-like conditions is hard to overstate. Psychotherapists note that art therapy not only has a positive effect on the client's general condition but may also help with psychosomatic disorders.
It helps develop fine motor skills, which means stimulating brain activity and the skill of movement coordination, in people with:
The most popular and frequently used types of art therapy are: drawing and painting therapy, fairy-tale therapy, play therapy, sand therapy, music therapy, and photo therapy. Very often these types of therapy are combined within a single session.
This is one of the deeper areas of art therapy, which, with the help of sand in a sandbox and under the guidance of a psychotherapist, leads a person into their own inner depths. Thanks to its unique sensory qualities, sand relaxes the whole body through the fingertips (where there are many nerve endings), and everything deep inside gradually and very gently comes into the person's awareness. A person finds within themselves the answers to their own questions.
Sand is an excellent developmental material for children. It gives a child the opportunity to live through accumulated psychological experience and to practice and consolidate knowledge about themselves and the world. Sand can serve as a mediator in children's play, especially for shy children or little ones who find it hard to make friends. It also plays a role in the development of a child's intellect, since it acts as a tactile "trainer," develops imagination, and may support speech; using it requires the child to follow certain rules and norms, and sometimes to be patient. Sand may reduce aggression and help children learn to be attentive and control their actions.
This approach is used both with children and with adults.
Fairy-tale therapy, or "healing with fairy tales," is an actively developing area of modern psychotherapy. Fairy-tale therapy uses therapeutic tales, specially constructed stories that metaphorically describe the problems and experiences faced by a child or adult client. A fairy tale can be used to convey knowledge, carry out assessment, and provide psychological support.
Visual art plays a major role in shaping a spiritually developed personality, refining feelings, and perceiving the phenomena of life and nature. By expressing themselves through drawing, a person gives an outlet to their feelings, wishes, and dreams, reshapes their relationships in different situations, and gently confronts some frightening, unpleasant, or traumatic images. Drawing and painting therapy is one of the versatile tools in psychological work.
