How Computed Tomography Is Performed
The CT procedure consists of two main stages: preparation and scanning.
Preparation includes:
- checking that there are no metal items on clothing or accessories (if there are, they will need to be removed);
- proper and comfortable positioning on the table (this process is fully controlled by the radiology technologist, who positions the patient according to the area being scanned).
The scanning stage includes:
- alignment of the light beam by the specialist;
- acquisition of a scout image;
- the scan itself (once the table moves into the scanner, you must not move, and during chest examinations you are also asked to hold your breath for a short time).
The procedure takes no more than 20 minutes, of which the examination itself is 3-5 minutes.
Equipment Used
For CT in Kyiv, TOP CLINIC DENIS uses a Philips Brilliance CT 64 scanner (USA and Israel), which collects data from 64 slices at once (0.67 mm thickness, coverage width up to 40 mm). It is a low-dose CT scanner. Its operation is based on the ultra-fast CIRS G4VS image reconstruction technology, which makes it possible to shorten the examination time and reduce the radiation dose considerably without loss of image accuracy or quality.
This scanner can be used to examine patients with limited mobility, as well as elderly patients and those who are overweight (up to 150 kg).
It is well suited for imaging of the brain, heart, blood vessels, lungs, joints, spine, limbs and other organs.
Computed tomography is performed only when indicated and as prescribed by a doctor, because the radiation dose exceeds that of a conventional X-ray.
