Schizophrenia: Managing Life Between Illusion and Reality
It is hard to imagine a more mysterious system than the human mind. It cannot be seen or touched, but its settings can be felt, its trends anticipated, and its course guided in the right direction.
One of the mental disorders that can be managed is schizophrenia. It is a serious disorder that is colloquially called a "split mind" or "split personality." It is considered chronic and cannot be completely cured, but significant improvement of the condition is possible.
What is schizophrenia?
There is a senseless stereotype that a diagnosis of schizophrenia marks a person as dangerous. This is absolutely not true. In fact, the opposite is often the case. Schizophrenia is a reflection of an internal struggle. The disorder is accompanied by a partial loss of contact with reality, and the distorted perception affects thinking and emotional behavior. A person seems to hover between real actions and imagination, and the boundary between them is sometimes blurred.
Schizophrenia, the symptoms of which vary widely, is conventionally divided into positive and negative. The first group includes disorganization, accompanied by:
- hallucinations: clearly seeing or feeling things that do not exist (objects, people, voices, smells);
- delusions and false beliefs;
- confused speech and inappropriate behavior.
The negative group of symptoms includes general manifestations: apathy, blunted emotions, and withdrawal to the point of complete isolation.
Schizophrenia: causes and signs
The main cause of the disease is an imbalance of neurobiological functions and disturbances in signal transmission between brain cells and brain areas. These defects may be congenital, hereditary, or acquired as a result of infections, head injuries, a difficult pregnancy or childbirth, severe psychological stress (especially in childhood), or various medical problems with brain development.
The disease usually does not appear before adolescence. The early signs of schizophrenia may be subtle:
- slight distortion of reality;
- unusual, unexpected associations;
- disrupted connections between thoughts;
- fragmented speech;
- a feeling of unreality;
- changes in emotions and communication;
- certain difficulties at school or work.
The signs at the initial stage are very similar to those of other diseases and mental disorders. Therefore, it is worth seeing a specialist right away to confirm or rule out an unwelcome diagnosis.
An experienced psychiatrist in Kyiv who sees patients at CSM Clinic can help identify the disease at an early stage, prescribe appropriate treatment, and help the person return to a productive life.
