Reflexology for Children

Does your child often have headaches or digestive problems? Do you need a rehabilitation course for cerebral palsy or other CNS disorders? Reflexology for children is a method used for treatment, prevention or rehabilitation in many conditions. You can have it done in Kyiv by an experienced specialist at CSM Clinic. Reflexology for children can help increase the effectiveness of drug therapy and, if necessary, can be combined with other physical therapy methods. In some cases acupuncture is used as a stand-alone method.

Reflexology is a set of techniques from ancient Chinese medicine that involves applying various physical factors to biologically active acupuncture points for their neurophysiological and neurochemical stimulation. The points correspond to a particular organ or condition, and stimulating them has a therapeutic effect. Special needles, pressure, heat sources, magnets and other devices can be used for acupuncture stimulation. Acupuncture and acupressure are used for treating children.

When Do Children Need Reflexology?

Reflexology can be especially helpful in childhood. During the active growth and development of the body, the recovery of impaired functions is much faster than in adults. That is why acupuncture for children and other acupuncture methods are widely used in pediatric practice in many leading clinics around the world. The WHO has published reviews of clinical studies of acupuncture for a number of conditions.

Acupuncture and acupressure sessions are prescribed by doctors of various specialties. Patients of CSM Clinic can count on a comprehensive approach and receive consultations with a neurologist, psychiatrist, pediatrician, pulmonologist, gastroenterologist, rehabilitation specialist and others.

An important component of an acupuncture course for children is the reflexologist's level of qualification. The clinic has an experienced specialist who will accurately identify the acupuncture points needed for the desired effect and perform the procedure according to international standards.

Symptoms

Various symptoms and conditions may be indications for reflexology in children:

Diseases

After a series of clinical trials conducted under strict methodological criteria, the World Health Organization (WHO) and the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) published a list of indications for medical acupuncture, which was adopted by the International Association for the Study of Pain (IASP).

Reflexology courses may be prescribed for the following diseases:

The choice of acupuncture points and methods of influence is determined by the patient's diagnosis.

Contraindications

The following diseases and conditions may be contraindications to reflexology:

Contraindications to the procedure are determined by doctors at the diagnostic stage. If any new symptoms appear during the course of treatment, the child's parents should tell the specialist about them.

The Procedure and How It Is Performed

Acupuncture has been used for a long time, and in recent decades many scientific studies have been conducted on it.

Inserting special needles into certain acupuncture points stimulates nerve endings in that area, triggering a sequence of nerve impulses in the CNS. As a result of this stimulation, certain endogenous substances with analgesic and antidepressant effects are released in the body. Vasoactive peptides are also released, which cause a local increase in blood flow at the needle insertion sites.

Before medical acupuncture sessions, the reflexologist takes the medical history and examines the patient. Treatment begins with pulse diagnosis, which helps the specialist determine what health problems a particular patient has. For one minute the doctor measures the pulse at the wrists of both hands, varying the pressure. After evaluating the results of the examination, the patient is prescribed acupuncture or acupressure, and the number of sessions is determined individually (usually 5 to 10 procedures).

Special thin, flexible needles for pediatric acupuncture are used for the sessions. At CSM Clinic in Kyiv, procedures are performed in strict compliance with the rules of asepsis and antisepsis, disposable needles are used, and the risk of infection is minimized. During the session the patient lies on a couch and the doctor inserts the needles into specific points. The duration of a session depends on the clinical case and can vary from 5 to 30 minutes. Needle insertion is generally not painful and is well tolerated by children of any age. In some cases patients do not even feel the needles being inserted.
After the session ends, the needles are removed.

Acupressure can be performed with the fingers or with various devices. Pressure, rotation or vibration is applied to the point.

Stimulating bioactive points affects nerve endings and triggers a sequence of nerve impulses in the CNS. This influence promotes the release of endogenous substances that, depending on the stimulated zone, have analgesic, antidepressant or vasoactive effects. As a result, pain may decrease, blood flow may improve, inflammation or spasms may ease, and metabolism and immunity may be supported.

Results

Acupressure and acupuncture for children may bring a number of positive effects:

Acupuncture can be used to treat various diseases, both in combination with medication and without it. It does not interfere with treatment or invasive procedures; on the contrary, it may enhance other medical methods.

How quickly acupuncture works depends on the condition. In some acute conditions improvement may occur even after one session. In more complex cases at least 4-5 sessions are needed to achieve an effect. The results of reflexology may last for a long time (months or years).

Results in Cerebral Palsy

In a number of countries, acupuncture is used as part of rehabilitation for children with cerebral palsy. A rehabilitation course that includes reflexology methods is reported to be more effective than rehabilitation without them. Acupuncture for cerebral palsy in children is used together with drug therapy, therapeutic exercise, massage and various physical therapy procedures. Its purpose is to stimulate brain function and relieve muscle spasms. The effectiveness of rehabilitation increases when restorative therapy is started early.

Reflexology for cerebral palsy may help achieve the following results:

Results in Down Syndrome

Acupuncture sessions help normalize muscle tone, stimulate the central and autonomic nervous systems, and improve general well-being and mood. The procedures may have a positive effect on the functioning of the internal organs.
