Electrocardiogram: How It Is Performed
A resting electrocardiogram is performed in several steps:
- the patient lies horizontally on a couch with the upper body exposed;
- the areas of skin for the electrodes are degreased with a special product;
- a gel that improves electrical conductivity is applied to the electrodes or to the skin;
- the specialist attaches the electrocardiograph electrodes to the patient's body in a specific order (2 on the arms and legs, 6 on the chest);
- before the test begins, the patient should relax and stay still.
Holter monitoring is one of the additional types of testing that can detect certain heart conditions. It is used for patients who have had a myocardial infarction. The method is also indicated for assessing the functioning of the cardiovascular system in heart defects of various origins. It is informative in arrhythmia, chronic heart failure and other conditions.
How Holter monitoring is performed:
- electrodes are placed on the patient's body in the same way as for a resting ECG and are secured with adhesive tape;
- the patient is given a special recorder connected to the electrodes (it should be carried with them throughout the monitoring period);
- the ECG is recorded continuously or in fragments if the patient's condition worsens;
- the patient keeps a record of their daily routine with exact times, including stress and physical exercise;
- as prescribed by the cardiologist, the patient may perform exercise tests during monitoring.
